Dukes win first series of the season

VINELAND- The Joey Gorman era of Dukes baseball officially begun this past weekend when the Dukes hosted the SUNY-Adirondack Timberwolves this past weekend. The two teams faced off for a 3-game set, with one game taking place on Saturday followed by a double header of Sunday morning.  

In game 1 of the series, the Dukes fell behind 3-0 early courtesy of a Timberwolves homerun. Starting pitcher Donavan Gevers would settle down after the 1st inning, not allowing another run for the next 3 innings. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Andrew Baldino got the Dukes on the board with a 2-RBI single. Jonathan Cimino would tie the game in the 5th inning with a solo homerun. Cumberland would add 3 more runs that inning, followed by another 3 runs in the 6th inning. All starting nine for Cumberland had atleast 1 hit. Cimino, Gavin Severa, Gage Ambruster would all collect 2 hits. Balidno would get the win on the mound as he pitched 3 innings, striking out 7 batters. Ambruster would get the last 3 outs for the Dukes en route to a 9-6 win. 

Game 2, Matt Misiti started out this game strong as he and Ty Powell combined to throw a shutout. The two pitchers combined to strikeout 13 batters. Powell earned the win in the game. Misiti, a right handed pitcher from Winter Park,FL gave up one hit and struck out 12 over 7 innings. John Wallace, Christian Rinick, and Jonathan Cimino each collected a hit for the Dukes. Baldino led the Dukes with one RBI on the a walk-off hit by pitch in the bottom of the 8th inning. Dukes won game 2, 1-0. The RCSJ-Cumberland baseball team would suffer their first defeat of the season with a 12-1 loss in game 3.

Cumberland will host Bergen County College on Friday before traveling to Piscataway, NJ for a double header on Sunday. For all updates on the Dukes, follow @GORCDukes on all social media platforms.
