Dukes clinch playoff berth with sweep of Vikings
TOMS RIVER- The RCSJ-Cumberland Dukes softball team clinched a spot in the Region XIX tournament after defeating the Ocean County College Vikings in a double header matchup. Cumberland defeated the Vikings in game 1 by a score of 29-5. The 2nd inning proved to be the difference maker as the Cumberland scored 19 runs in that inning. Anita Hassen, Ashley Brag, and Angelina Figueroa collected 3 hits in game one while Jordan Spates, Mollie Reece, Karly Smaniotto, Giana Fiske all had 2 hits a piece. Brag pitched all 5 innings while striking out 6 Vikings.
The Dukes would complete the sweep in game 2 with a win of 9-7. Cumberland used a 3-run 7th inning to propel them to victory. Spates and Reece both had 3 hits. Spates also led the Dukes in RBI's with 3. Fiske and Smaniotto combined to pitch 7 innings while giving up 3 earned runs. Cumberland will now wait for the regular season to conclude for other teams in Region XIX before they get their official playoff seeding.
