Softball Dropped Two on Day Two of Spring Trip

The Hudson Valley Community College softball team dropped a pair of games during day two of their spring break trip in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Vikings were defeated 15-2 to a tough RCSJ-Cumberland program and were later defeated 10-5 by WVU Potomac State. 

Game 1
RCSJ-Cumberland 15, Hudson Valley 2

The Vikings fell behind early and couldn't overcome the 10-plus run deficit after the first three innings of the game. RCSJ-Cumberland jumped out early, scoring in the first inning on a Hudson Valley error. In the next two innings, the Vikings allowed 12 runs to take full control of the game. 

Alyssa SmithGianna BuccieroGabrielle Castiglione and Alexis Baker all had one hit to lead the Vikings offense. Miranda Peck took the loss as she allowed 15 runs on 13 hits in 3.2 innings pitched. Bucciero entered the game in relief and tossed a clean 1.1 innings to end the game. 

Game 2
WVU Potomac State 10, Hudson Valley 5

Similar to the first game of the day, the Vikings fell behind early, giving up five runs in the second inning. The Vikings attempted to crawl back into the game as they responded with a three-run inning in the top of the third. Castiglione and Abigayle Campbell each had RBIs in the big third inning for the Vikings.

Hudson Valley edged closer in the top of the sixth inning when Bucciero scored on a WVU Potomac error, trailing 6-4. WVU responded with another big inning to put the game away for good.

As a team, the Vikings tallied seven hits on the day with Bucciero and Castiglione all collecting multiple hits for Hudson Valley, both finished the game with two hits. 

Shealynn Peckowitz was tabbed with the start and tossed 5.1 innings, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits, while striking out seven and walking one. Peck finished the game in relief, throwing the final two-thirds of an inning to close out the game. 

On Deck for Softball:
The Vikings have a rematch scheduled with WVU Potomac tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. and then they are set to take on Southeastern Community College-Whiteville at 5:30 p.m. for day three of their Myrtle Beach trip.
