Leadership from Wilson and Gill earn awards

VINELAND - Dukes Basketball opened their season against one of the tougher Region XIX Division II opponents in Essex County College.  On November 3, the Dukes opened their season with much anticipation as the Women's Basketball program returned to action for the first time since 2019 while the Men's Basketball program look to bounce back against a tough 2021-22 season.  Two leaders emerged on that night, Julianna Wilson and Colin Gill.  For their leadership in a tough environment, they have been named Jimmy Williams Dukes of the Week.

Julianna Wilson - Millville, NJ - Millville HS

The feisty freshman guard from Millville battled all night longer against the tough Essex CC Wolverines.  In her first collegiate action, Wilson consistently attacked the basket scoring in many ways.  Whether it was behind the arc or in the lane, Wilson brought the action to the Wolverines and showed a toughness that is a hallmark of Cumberland Dukes Athletics.  For her consistent drive and tough leadership, Wilson was named Female Athlete of the Week.

Colin Gill - Swedesboro, NJ - Kingsway Regional

Guard play has been a hallmark for Dukes Men's Basketball.  Since the arrival of 5th-year head coach, Darrin Stalling, guard play has been the constant of his program.  From Taylor Clarke to Max Cruz, the Dukes have always had a steady hand at the point guard position.  Enter Colin Gill.  Gill scored a team-high 21 points in their season-opening victory versus Essex CC on November 3.  Gill scored the game tying basket on an acrobatic turnaround jump shot late in the 2nd half to spur the comeback victory.  For his composure and leadership in high pressure situations, Gill has been named Male Athlete of the Week.
