Softball sweeps Dukes of the Week honors

VINELAND - After being without their Ace pitcher, Cumberland Softball turned to Ashley Brag and Karly Smaniotto to takeover the main pitching duties for the Dukes.  Not only did they accept the challenge and succeed, they have offered a glimpse into the future for Dukes Softball.  For their willingness to take on the challenge and their toughness in competition, Brag and Smaniotto were named the Jimmy Williams Dukes of the Week.

Ashley Brag - Millville, NJ (Millville HS)

The freshman righthander has taken over the No. 2 pitching slot, but has not acted any less bit than the Ace of the staff.  Brag joined the Dukes as a relief arm, however, she has become a steady, reliable pitcher for Cumberland.  She has appeared in 11 games this season and has earned two wins so far, including an impressive 3-1 victory over Camden where she held the Cougars to just 4 hits.  Brag has also volunteered her time working various events on campus and continues to be a tremendous teammate for the Dukes being one of the most active supporters during each game.  For her overall commitment and dedication to Cumberland Athletics and Dukes Softball, Ashley Brag has been named Duke of the Week.

Karly Smaniotto - Vineland, NJ (Vineland HS)

The freshman from Vineland, Smaniotto has become the de facto Ace of the Dukes pitching staff.  Karly leads the Dukes in innings pitched (63.0) and boasts an impressive 4.11 earned run average.  The quiet, feisty pitcher has also contributed at the plate batting .340 with 17 hits and 8 RBIs.  Smaniotto had a bases-clearing double against Chesapeake College earlier in the season which sparked the team's 5-1 start to the season.  Karly's contributions go beyond the batter's box and pitching circle as she is also the go-to for pregame hairstyling.  For her overall efforts, Smaniotto has been named Duke of the Week.
