Baseball Recap: Dukes on a tear
VINELAND - The RCSJ-Cumberland Dukes Baseball program seems to have gotten themselves on the right track with consecutive sweeps against ranked opponents. A week ago, the Dukes swept the then 4th-ranked Northampton Spartans and followed that with a weekend doubleheader sweep over the 15th-ranked Middlesex Blue Colts.
On Monday, April 14, the Dukes traveled to Edison to finish out the 3-game set against Middlesex and completed the sweep with a 9-5 victory. Tyler Schoppe led the way offensively as he drove in 3 runs and scored twice while going 3 for 4. Ryan Beebe earned his first collegiate victory on the mound for the Dukes.
On Wednesday, April 16, the Dukes hosted Eastern University (JV) and jumped out to an early 13-2 lead after just one inning. Schoppe made the most of his short day as he went 2 for 2 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. The highlights came from Kory Jenkins, Vincent Bognanni, and Christian Willis. Each of the freshmen drilled deep home runs with Willis delivering his first of his collegiate career. The Dukes would go on to win 22-8.
