Dukes XC enjoying a stellar 2018 season

The Cumberland County College Cross Country team continues to reel in tremendous individual performances from their runners in 2018. A strong testament to the dedication of legendary head coach, Dave Sheridan, and longtime assistant coach, Courtney West.

In late September, the Dukes traveled to Media, PA for the Dan Talbot Invitational and made their presence known in a big way. Nayeli Garcia, Shyann Phelps, Oleh Chernenko, and Eric Vanaman all placed in the top 10 in their respective races with Phelps placing 4th with a time of 30:45. It would be her 4th top ten finish in as many races. Garcia was not far behind in the Women's race as she finished 8th with a time of 31:38. In the Men's division, Vanaman finished 6th with a time of 35:14 and Chernenko was just under a minute behind finishing 9th at 36:06.

Next on the list would be the Delaware Blue & Gold Invitational where the Dukes would take on a number of NCAA Division I and Division II colleges. Cumberland County joined Camden County College, Delaware Tech, and Harcum College as the only NJCAA programs competing in the event. Among the NJCAA programs, the Dukes performed nicely by placing in the top 10 amongst the junior college institutions. Shyann Phelps finished 5th among junior college runners with a time of 30:19 with Nayeli Garcia finishing just a touch behind her with a 6th place finish of 30:28. In the Men's division, Eric Vanaman and Oleh Chernenko finished 8th and 10th respectively.

In the Northeast JUCO Meet in Warwick, RI this past weekend, the Dukes Cross Country team had a tremendous outing. Shyann Phelps finished in the top ten once again placing 7th, with Nayeli Garcia not far behind placing 8th. In the Men's race, Eric Vanaman finished with a 13th place finish with Oleh Chernenko also not far behind his teammate with a 14th place finish.

Next up for the Dukes will be the Region XIX Championships being held in Wilmington, DE with the NJCAA National Cross Country Championships the following weekend in Holyoke, MA.
