Bio

Joey Gorman was officially hired on July 31, 2023

RCSJ-Cumberland Athletics is proud to announce the hiring of Joey Gorman to lead the Cumberland Dukes Baseball program.  Gorman comes to the Dukes after his second stint as the Director of Player Development of the Anderson Monarchs.  During his time with the Monarchs, Gorman was tasked with developing individual and team-oriented goals along with in-season and off-season strength and conditioning.

Prior to returning to the Monarchs, Gorman served as an assistant coach for West Chester University under two-time NCAA DII National Coach of the Year, Jad Prachniak, during the 2019 and 2020 seasons.  After Prachniak departed for the University of Delaware prior to the 2021 season, Gorman was elevated to the lead assistant role under veteran Head Coach, Mike LaRosa.  While at West Chester, Gorman took on a multitude of roles including scouting, player development, office support, and on-field coaching.  In what could be considered a career-altering time period, Gorman was instrumental in managing the program and its players in the winter of 2021 during the coaching transition from Prachniak to LaRosa. This would provide proof to the baseball community that Gorman could run a high-level program effectively in the face of adversity.

Gorman's college coaching career began at Neumann University during the Fall of 2018, where he served as the program's pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. He planned daily pitching workouts while coordinating with other members of the field staff, analyzed pitcher performance using tools, reports, and technology such as Driveline, the Core Velocity Belt, and video analysis and prescribed and monitored a customized development plan for each pitcher based on areas of opportunities, strengths, and weaknesses.

Additionally, Gorman communicated plans, goals, and progress with players and relevant staff members, assisted in managing the daily operations of the baseball program – including, but not limited to, field maintenance, set-up, and equipment management - and organized visits with recruits and their families to Neumann University campus.

Gorman earned his master's degree from Neumann University in Sport Business in 2019 while serving on the baseball staff at Neumann. He is a 2017 graduate of Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia where he was a member of the Hawks' baseball team for three seasons. He earned his bachelor's degree in Fine Arts with a minor in Communication. He was a two-time athletic honor roll recipient at St. Joseph's as well.

The left-handed pitcher led Neumann-Goretti High School to back-to-back Philadelphia Catholic League and city championships, before matriculating to Saint Joseph's University. He was named Catholic League Blue Division MVP and Neumann-Goretti's Most Outstanding Athlete as a senior, and also pulled in First Team All-Southeastern Pennsylvania, All-City, and All-Catholic League honors in 2011 and 2012. He was named the 2011 Philadelphia Daily News Pitcher of the Year and was a four-time Carpenter Cup team member.

What others are saying about Gorman's hire

I have known Joey for some time now, almost a decade. What always stuck out to me was his selflessness and his constant quest to grow as a coach.  Seeing him operate on the recruiting trail for Neumann and West Chester was impressive.  Despite all of his accomplishments on and off the field, it was Joey's addiction to the process that really impressed our department.  On-field results are not the main goal at Cumberland, it is moving our kids to the next level.  We are excited to have Joey lead our baseball staff and even more excited to add someone with such high character to our department. - Jonathan Dijamco, Director of Athletics - RCSJ-Cumberland

I am thrilled that Joey has earned the opportunity to lead the baseball program at Cumberland. Cumberland has had an outstanding program over the years and I feel that Joey will dedicate himself to giving the program his all to continue the program's winning ways.  One thing I know about Joey is that he loves the game. Equally important is the fact that he wants the best for the players. His positivity on top of his baseball acumen will not only afford the players a better opportunity to achieve success on the field, but off it as well.  His attitude is infectious and the players that become part of the Dukes baseball program will figure out quickly that they will be experiencing something far more than just the game between the lines - Fritz Hamburg, Head Coach - St. Joseph's University (16th Season) / NCAA DI Coach for 30+ seasons

Rowan-Cumberland has found the right person to lead the baseball program.  Joey has a high-level baseball acumen, his background and experiences as a player and coach will serve him well in this position.  Coach Gorman has the unique ability to make a connection with everyone on a roster, he is a genuine person that demonstrates a selfless mentality.  He has a relentless worker who will always be looking to do what is best for the program.  I'm excited for the future of Rowan-Cumberland with Coach Gorman leading the program - Jad Prachniak, Head Coach - North Alabama (2nd Season) / Former Assistant Coach - Delaware/ Former Head Coach - West Chester Univ.

Joey is an outstanding coach who will put the work in to get the best out of his players. The time he has spent building relationships with colleagues and players assures me that he is the right fit for this job. I look forward to watching his young career take off as Head Baseball Coach of the Dukes. - Andre Butler, USA Baseball / Graveyard Mentality / Former NCAA Assistant Coach (Eastern, Penn, DeSales, Penn State)

I've had a wonderful time coaching under Joey. He is one of the hardest working people I know with a heart bigger than himself. He provides a healthy work environment that advances work ethic while simultaneously keeping the game fun and loose. He is a great friend and an even better person! - Jahli Hendricks, IF - Southern University /  Anderson Monarchs / LLWS Legend
